Arequipa is Peru's second-largest city, not just a transit stop en route to Colca Canyon — its historic center, built from white volcanic sillar stone (hence the 'White City' nickname), is UNESCO-listed and substantial enough to justify a day or two on its own. From there, Colca Canyon is a 3-4 hour drive, offering Andean condor sightings at Cruz del Cóndor and multi-day trekking through terraced valley villages.
