An overseas department using the euro, like mainland France — unlike French Polynesia's own CFP franc. Réunion's interior is dominated by Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world's most active and most visitable volcanoes, and by three vast natural amphitheaters (cirques): Mafate (reachable only on foot or by helicopter, no road at all), Cilaos, and Salazie. Piton des Neiges, the island's highest point, and a strong canyoning scene round out the adventure side, alongside the Cascade de Grand Galet waterfall, Saint-Gilles beach and diving, and Creole cuisine. Reached via Saint-Denis airport (RUN); best May-November (dry season).
